In the recent Educational Convention held in Warrenton, Virginia, Professor Venable offered a resolution inviting the lady teachers of the State to become members of the Educational Association and sit in its Conventions, and the resolution was rejected by that body of educated gentlemen. In this we think the Convention was in great error. Teaching is certainly one of the most elevated of the professions, and the women of the country are engaged in it to a very large extent. In the South since the war thousands of the most educated and refined ladies, living in affluence and wealth before the war, have gone to teaching in private and public schools as a means of support to those dependent on them, and they will no doubt make it a permanent profession. Why, then, should they not attach themselves to educational associations and participate in the educational conventions which are intended to advance the cause of the profession? So far a true lady can never condescend to mingle with rough men in a political assemblage, where the scramble is for office. From long associations, men become rough and unpolished, and a lady would feel out of place in such a crowd.
The time is passing when these liberal views in behalf of ladies' occupations can be successfully combatted or resisted by those who want to 'crib, cabin and confine' them forever to the parlor, the chamber and the workshop. Ladies can teach young ideas how to shoot, just as well as they can shoot young ideas with Cupid's bow, and they should be invited to enter fully as professors into all the branches of education, and participate fully in all that concerns its advancement and elevation.
