On our first page will be found the powerful & unanswerable address of the Standing Committee, upon the subject of the Removal,
We ask all to read it.
In all we may say during this campaign of volunteer candidates, we do not wish to be considered as attacking private character. We feel no enmity against any person named for an office, who is not on the Removal ticket, nor in speaking against them, as in duty bound to do, have we any design to impeach them for any thing except their present public position and conduct. Their reputations are, for ought we shall allege, pure and unsuspected. Some or all named, have been removal men in profession and practice, but the position in which they have now allowed themselves to be placed, is truly unfortunate. Can it be possible that they fully appreciate the nature of their situation and the peculiar strength and justice of the reproaches that can be levelled against them? They allow their backs to be turned upon their friends, and silence and hope to the foe. They stand antagonist to the cause that they have heretofore professed to support, and expect most of their votes from its bitter and deadly enemies. It has been by reason of solicitations that should have been resisted, and from want of reflection that should have been indulged in that they stand where they are in an ill chosen position before the voters of the county. It would be well judged were they yet, to decline the contest, and avoid the perilous field before them. But with them rests the responsibility of their course, and if they decide to make themselves the victims of Danville malice and selfishness they need not expect from true hearted Removal men any support. For our enemies we have blows; for our friends when erring remonstrances:
Two weeks from next Tuesday, the people of Columbia County. will be called upon to perform an important duty: to themselves and to their posterity-to vote for or against the Removal of their county seat. For upwards of thirty years, a majority of the county have from year to year petitioned to the Legislature for a redress of their grievances, and have as often been denied through the lying intrigue and management of the Danville faction, but thanks to the faithfulness and perseverance of Senator Ross, and our late members. Messrs. Snyder and Funston, the people of the County now have an opportunity of vindicating their own rights, and of placing the seat of Justice, where it should have been placed originally without any expense to themselves. The Danville faction will, of course, contest the battle: inch by inch, and not hesitate to use all the means within their reach, however detestable and degrading they may be to themselves or the instrument they may make use of to effect their purpose. It behoves, then the friends of Removal, to be up and doing-to arouse every man to his duty that we may push forward in one solid phalanx to a certain and glorious victory.
Just as our paper was going to press, last week, we received a request to announce David Clark, as a candidate for the Legislature The same announcement was sent to Danville, and Best refused to publish it. until after it had appeared in our paper, that the people might be duped into the belief that Clark was brought out by people in the Centre? Will this shallow trick take? We shall see.
