Full Text

Even the New Jail Leaks.

The new jail at Martinsburg appears to be about as leaky as the old one. The Herald of last week says: Theodore Furley and Pete Lewis, white, and Oscar Williams and Ed Mathews, colored, broke jail Thursday morning about 9 o'clock. They were out in the corridor for exercise and during the temporary absence of the turnkey dug a hole in the brick wall and a window at the rear end of the jail and made their escape. Mathews, the leader of the gang, is from North Carolina and a tough customer. Furley and Lewis hid out in the pine hills and their knowledge of the country will no doubt render recapture difficult. Saturday two of the prisoners, Furley and Lewis, returned to the jail and gave themselves up. They preferred their snug quarters in prison to dodging in the pine hills.
