Nonchalantly smoking a cigar, and takes to indicate that both men were without even taking the trouble to wipe his shoes, which were covered with mud, leaving well-defined footprints in his wake, a well-dressed man entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Hislotte, at 490 Beretania avenue, last evening and, after a leisurely trip through the front of the house, took his departure through the front gate.
Evidently satisfied with his tour of inspection, the man appeared for a second time on the front lanai, but was frightened off by the sudden appearance of a member of the family, who, though considerably startled, had ample time to observe the appearance of the man before he was completely hidden from view in the riotous undergrowth of the vacant lot immediately across the street, which recently came into prominence as the scene of the Toogood murder.
Although his boldness belies the theory that the man was a novice, it is considered remarkable that a gold watch and several pieces of jewelry on the dressing table in the room through which he is known to have passed were untouched.
It is believed, however, that his hasty tour of the room was for the purpose of sizing up the situation and that he intended to do the actual thievery after the family had retired.
Toogood murder.
A neighbor, who had watched the strange actions of the man, verified the story told at the Hislotte home.
Only the feminine members of the family were at home at the time. After a council of war they decided to notify police headquarters, and Chief of Detectives McDuffie responded to the call, making a careful search of the house and premises. It is the opinion of McDuffie that two men were working together, as it was discovered that the back door, which had been locked from the inside, was open.
In the cellar McDuffie found Chinese sandal tracks, and this also adds to the mystery, as the man seen on the porch was evidently a white man and the mud which he tracked in left the imprint of a Cuban heel.

McDuffie says that there have been a number of complaints from this neighborhood of late and that the patrolmen have been ordered to exercise particular vigilance on their night beat.
It has been reported also that a number of tramps have been found sleeping on the grounds of the German church nearby.
