TORY QUIRKS AND QUIDDITIES.
A man of common sense would suppose, after the conduct of G. Britain, towards this country, that the lex talionis would justify any sort of unreasonable resistance to her insults. But the ideas of the tories on this head are very different.
Does she impress our seamen, and is a demand for redress made? Take care, cry the tories, don't talk to her in that style, if you want to get any satisfaction.
Does she seize our vessels and confiscate our merchandize, and are complaints made to her for Satisfaction? The administration are all wrong, Say the tories—the tone should be lower—the key is too high.
Does she kill a citizen in our own waters? Be easy, roar the tories—be easy, or you'll get nothing—the administration must not be so saucy.
Does she attack a national frigate in time of peace, murder a part of her crew and captivate another part? Now, be calm, for God's sake, be calm, preach the tories—let's argue the point, let's not go to war—let's reason about it.
Is an arrangement made with her accredited minister, and does she wantonly violate it? She had a right to do so, quoth the tories—why complain? if you complain you'll affront Great Britain—so, take care, take care!
Is her minister dismissed for his repeated insolence? There cry the tories, there! you've done it now; now you've mortally offended His Majesty! Ah! the Lord knows what will become of the country now; nothing will do but to send and ask pardon.
Such, from time to time, has been the hushing, quirking, quibbling language of the tories or British faction in the United States, from the beginning to the end of English outrage upon us. Let Great Britain do as she will—let her impress, capture, attack and murder us, the cry of the tories is be calm, be easy, take care, don't offend her, you'll have war. In the name of God is this scene of degradation never to end? If it cannot end without war, why then let war come, for we cannot fare worse than we do at present.
It does not seem altogether so proper to use the word "TORY," for in truth, there seems to be no BODY to their outrage upon us.
