TO THE MOONBEAM.

Go, gentle Moonbeam, gaily gleam,
On wings of zephyr lightly riding:
Fly to my fair, and carry there,
The sighs my bursting heart is hiding.

Shouldst thou not find her senses steep,
Tell her whence comes the bashful rover
Say trickling tears and constant fears
Are killing fast her absent lover.

But if thou find the maid reclin'd,
If on her eyelid sleep reposes;
Thy wings unfurl, and kiss the girl,
And bathe them in her dew of roses.

Make no sojourn, but quick return,
And hither bear the countless treasure;
The purpose won, thy office done,
I'll prize thee, Moonbeam, without measure.

And woo thee oft at midnight soft,
To be of lover's bliss the fountain,
What time so bright the elves of night
Fair chase thee up the misty mountain.
