POETRY.

For the Morning Star.

SABBATH MORN.

Hail, Sabbath morn! sweet Sabbath morn!
Fairest of those which time adorn!
How blest are mortals here to know
Mornings so sweet, so fair as thou!
How blest are mortals here to see
One day in seven perpetually
Ushering in to man forlorn,
The blessings of a Sabbath morn!
Hail, Sabbath morn! sweet Sabbath morn!
Though infidels thy blessings scorn,
Though haughty worldlings stigmatize
As low and mean, thy heavenly joys;
Though sinful men, with proud disdain,
Receive the heaven-sent boon in vain,
Yet shall my heart be ever warm
In praise of thee, sweet Sabbath morn.
Hail, Sabbath morn! transcendent morn!
Though earthly bliss be from me torn,
Though sorrows gather o'er my head,
And days are dark, and friends are fled;
Though all the waves of earthly wo
Over my head still wildly flow;
Yet, when all other joys are gone,
Still thine shall cheer, sweet Sabbath morn.
Hail, Sabbath morn! auspicious morn!
The Savior, at thy early dawn,
Arose, triumphant from the grave,
A Prince with mighty power to save.
O may my spirit ever bow
To thee, my God! O meet me now!
My soul with pure devotion warm,
On this, thy holy Sabbath morn.
