We cannot have access to the official returns of the election for Governor, as agreeably to the constitution, they are sent to the seat of government under a sealed cover, directed to the President of the Senate, and are not to be opened till the meeting of the legislature. Our information as to the result of this election consequently is derived from private sources only, which, however, may generally be depended upon. We are sorry to add, that these give a small majority to General Villere. We hope that our apprehensions of the consequences that may result from the elevation of this man to the gubernatorial chair will not be realized. Our opposition to his election was not factious or groundless. It originated from a firm conviction of his incapacity to fulfill the duties of the office either with dignity or intelligence, and in the acknowledged necessity that he will lie under to resort to others for advice and direction in the common routine of business. Our opposition to his administration will partake of the same character--it will be an open, a candid opposition, bottomed on truth and supported by argument--it will neither vituperate actions nor misrepresent motives.
A great deal will depend on his secretary of state or prime minister. If he be a man of talent and honesty, familiar with public affairs, much will be saved to the governor's feelings--much to the peace and dignity of the State.
