WAR ON CRIME

$3,000,000 To Be Spent on Machine Guns. Armored Cars and Arsenals.

Washington—A war chest of between $2,500,000 and $3,000,000 to equip the government's crime fighters was disclosed as being under consideration by justice department officials and Lewis Douglas, director of the budget. Establishment of 10 or 12 additional offices of the division of investigation, enrollment of 270 men and the purchase of 20 armored cars, 200 speedy squad cars and a quantity of submachine guns, rifles, bullet proof vests and tear gas equipment are contemplated.

The department now has 419 agencies in 24 offices. With the 12 point legislative program proposed by Attorney General Cummings being gradually accepted by congress, the justice department has been represented as in need of additional administrative facilities.

In addition to wanting equipment, officials pointed out that facilities for prosecution would also need extension. Assistant Attorney General Joseph B. Keenan conferred at length with William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, over the week end and announced there was general agreement between him and Green on the so-called anti-racketeering bill. The measure, designed to stamp out violence and intimidation directed against the movement of goods in interstate commerce, has passed the senate and is now in the judiciary committee.

Final house action on seven of the Cummings anti-crime measures—ranging from one to permit the death penalty in kidnaping cases to another which would make it a federal offense to flee across state lines to escape prosecution for crime—appeared likely to be taken soon.
