YANKEES HALT PANTHERS, 7-5 TO DEADLOCK CURRENT SERIES
BY JOEL W. SMITH
Coming from behind with a sparkling three-run rally in the sixth inning, the Atlanta Yankees whipped the Atlanta Panthers, 7-5. Sunday afternoon, at Yankee Field, to deadlock their current intra-city diamond series at 1-all.
The Yankees went on top in the first inning, when Jeterman Spears got on base on an error and later crossed the plate. Then the Panthers bounced back with two unearned runs in the second and added two more in the third on successive doubles by John Calhoun and Frank Redding, together with a Texas-league single by George Gray.
YANKEES FIND BATTING POWER
The Panthers took advantage of a base on balls to Cyrus Allen and an infield miscue to push over another run in the fourth. Then in the bottom of the frame the Yankees found their batting power to score two runs and reduce the lead to 5-3. Carl Emerson started things rolling with an infield hit; Arthur Crawford doubled and Dillard Radford connected for a single.
The Yankees scored a single run in the fifth on Spears' infield hit and a double by Eddie Jones and went on to put the game in the bag in the sixth on singles by James Language and Ulysses Roberts, plus a two-bagger by Spears.
EMERSON STOPS ATTEMPTED RALLY
The Panthers attempted to knot the count in the ninth, when Emory Redding and Calhoun walked. Manager Bennie Wilson then called Carl Emerson from third base to the mound. Emerson forced Frank Redding to pop; George Gray looked at a third strike and Julius Hammond went down swinging to end the game.
James Washburn started on the mound for the Yankees; Daniel took over in the third; and Emerson pitched to three men in the ninth. They limited the Panthers to six hits, while their mates collected ten hits off Cyrus Allen and Howard L. Bulger.
James Language came up with the field gem of the afternoon, when he turned somersault in fielding a slow grounder and threw out Charles Wilcox. Standouts at bat were Jeterman Spears, Arthur Crawford, John Calhoun and Frank Redding with two hits apiece.
BOX SCORE
UMPIRES: Charles Boswell (behind the plate): Howard Long, (on the bases)
