The American brig Hannah, sailing from Savannah to Portsmouth, was hailed and attacked by a French privateer off Start Point. The privateer fired musketry for 8-10 minutes, boarded with 20-30 men, wounded the crew, beat the captain, plundered valuables, and took the crew aboard their vessel, steering southward to France. A British brig of war, the Persian under Capt. Bertan, chased and forced the privateer to abandon the prize, rescuing the crew and taking charge of the Hannah, proceeding to Plymouth.
