New-Orleans, Oct. 9.
THE CIRCULAR from the Kentucky Committee of Correspondence, for furthering the election of Mr. Clay to the Presidency of the United States, partakes of the common place reasonings and arguments which are used on similar occasions. We see nothing in it that either adds to or takes from the chances of that candidate, or weakens, in our estimation, the prospects of his opponents. We, however, notice with surprise, the intention of the friends of this candidate to thrust him into the House of Representatives for the purpose of making a kind of bargain with his opponents for the high and dignified office in question. We deprecate the sentiments entertained by this committee of the representatives of the nation; supposing the election should be transferred from the people. The committee, however, appears well acquainted with the means which must be used in that event, to secure the success of their candidate, viz. "intrigue and influence, bargain and management." But, whatever may be the calculations of the supporters of such aspirants to office, there is too much good sober sense in this nation to permit intriguers to have a chance of thus trifling for the highest office in its gift. The suffrages of the American people will demonstrate this by a voice as powerful as their sense of justice. No political bargain and sale ought ever to be committed to the polluted "management" of any public body which can be touched by base considerations.
This Circular, as we have already stated cannot advance the pretensions of Mr. Clay to the Presidency; on the contrary, it is calculated to leave him just where he set out.
