Must Face Inquiry
By Women Voters
WASHINGTON, July 19—Candidates for Congress will be questioned during this year's campaign by the National League of Women Voters as to their views on the civil service foreign policy, social legislation and consumer protection.
Candidates' questionnaires, issued by the league since 1920, are regarded as one of the league's most important activities in election years. Information compiled from them is made available to the public.
Mrs. Harris T. Baldwin, first vice-president and legislative chairman of the league, said today that candidates this year would be asked to state their position on the following issues:
1. Extent to which the Federal Government should assume responsibility toward social legislation and public welfare.
2. Extension of merit system to include all postmasters and employees of new federal agencies which become permanent.
3. Repeal of Section 213 of the Economy Act, discriminating against employment of married persons.
4. Enactment of new food, drug and cosmetic law "for primary purpose of consumer protection," administered by Food and Drug Administration.
5. Approval of trade bargaining through reciprocal agreement with other countries, to obtain tariff reduction.
In asking the candidate to state his proposal for a neutrality policy of the United States, the National League asks:
A. Would you give up diplomatic and naval protection of American commerce with belligerents?
B. Would you favor embargoes on shipments to belligerent nations of all commodities, basic war materials and munitions of war?
C. Would you favor co-operating with nonbelligerent nations to prevent or stop war by:
Consultation under the Pact of Paris?
Determination of aggressor in order to apply nonrecognition doctrine?
Differentiation between aggressor and victim in the application of embargoes?
