GRAND RAPIDS. FRIDAY. JUNE 14.
"CIRCULATION."
The Telegram Herald, in the light of the ex-
posure of its flimsy artifice to deceive the
aldermen and the public in respect to the type
question, now practically abandons that issue
and bases its claims to be the lowest bidder for
the city printing "mainly" upon its own much
vaunted claim that its
circulation is larger
than that of the "Eagle"
As that paper tries to score a point in favor
of its utterly false pretentions in this respect,
on the ground that the "Eagle" has thus far
entirely ignored them, and thus permitted
that paper to receive all the advantages which
it might secure by the "blowing" process, the
Eagle now says that its regular circulation
is much larger than the Telegram Herald's,
both in the city and as a whole, that the
Eagle's circulation in the city alone is
greater than the whole of the Telegram Herald's:
and no showing can be made to the
Contrary, even by the employment of any
knavish trick which the management of the
Telegram Herald has the ability to concoct,
however expert in that line their past per-
formances have shown them to be.
The above, clipped from yesterday's
Eagle, is simply laughable but is evidently
seriously intended and we will
try to so treat it.
We gather from the above that the
writer claims that the Eagle's regular
daily circulation, in the city alone, is
greater than the whole of the regular
daily circulation of THE TELEGRAM-
HERALD.
We claim that it is not.
To support our claim we are willing
to deposit $100, if the Eagle will do like-
wise, with the cashier of any bank in
the city, to be disposed of as follows:
A committee of three business men,
one to be selected by us, one by the
Eagle, and the third party to be mutual-
ly agreed upon, shall examine into the
alleged circulation of the two papers
for the past week or one month, and
decide which claim is the true fact in
the case.
If this committee shall find the Eagle's
claim that their regular daily circula-
tion is greater than the whole of ours
is the true one, then our $100 shall be
equally divided between the U. B. A.
and St. Mark's Homes, and their $100
returned to them. If the committee
find that the claim of the Eagle is not a
true one, then their $100 shall be di-
vided between the Homes and ours re-
turned to us.
We would respectfully ask of the
Eagle with whom we shall deposit our
$100.
