Full Text

On Tuesday, last week, at four o'clock in the morning, an excellent horse started from the Bell tavern in Danvers, to travel eighty miles in ten hours on a wager, between the owner of the animal and a knight of the stirrup, of forty dollars, to receive eighty if the horse performed it. The course occupied on the occasion, was an extent of two miles, marked out on the public road in Danvers. Notwithstanding the many embarrasses thrown in his way by the unskilfulness of those who had the management of the horse, and some of them were so great as even to have the appearance of design and cruelty, this generous beast, by dint of courage, proceeded seventy six miles in nine hours and an half (in a very sultry hot day) and there his strength utterly failed. — It will be a consolation to our benevolent readers to be informed, that death soon released him from all future outrages, and that the inhuman gamblers met with the cordial execration of every feeling spectator.
