Full Text
PHE Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs, Walter Robertson, has informed Congress that Communist China has refused even to discuss the possibility of a solution on Quemoy and Matsu off the coast of China.
The reason, Robertson says, is that no solution other than the occupation of Formosa is acceptable to the Reds. The Communists feel that they will be strong enough, in the future, to take Formosa, and Quemoy and Matsu are actually minor issues with them.
The United States, of course, is not ready to abandon Formosa and probably will not be for many, many years to come. The attitude of the Reds, then, is an ominous one and almost promises future trouble when and if the balance of power ever changes.
Rumblings in the Far East.
Just as the Russians appear to be unwavering in their insistence that the West has no rights in Berlin, the Chinese Reds flatly reject a sensible negotiation of the issue. This is a hard attitude and reflects the convictions of Communists that their world movement is growing stronger steadily and will one day be able to put things in order -- the way they conceive order.
This latest revelation, by Assistant Secretary Robertson, makes it even more apparent than ever that the United States cannot afford to let the Communists gain, comparatively, in the nuclear armaments race. It backs up the position of all those who feel that letting the Russians gain a sizable lead on us in the ICBM field would be highly dangerous.
