Abe Wilkins [c.]; Rose Mitchell [c.]; Abe. Perkins [c.]; J. Duncan and Haggerty, white, waiting for transportation to the Jackson penitentiary.
Where they had lodgings prepared for them for the next ten years.
It seems that they had obtained, by some means, tools, with which they had filed off the hinges and bolts of the iron grating door, and when jailor Styles went in, he was knocked down, run over, and they made good their escape to the street. An alarm was immediately given, when pursuit was made, and after a short but quick race, Haggerty was overhauled by a citizen, who, on bringing him back, met Marshal Smith, to whom he was turned over.
The others made their escape-eight in all; seven negroes and a white man."
