A Modern Miracle
As each day rolls by with new reports of retrenchment and
loss of business by the strongest of white companies
backed by hundreds of thousands of dollars, the ability of
the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance company to not
only hold its own but show a definite increase becomes a
living tribute to the men who guide its destinies.

The North Carolina Mutual was founded 33 years ago.
Its home is in Durham, North Carolina. Its president is
C. C. Spaulding. Mr. Spaulding, World readers should re-
call, is the man who visited in Atlanta not so long ago and
asserted the depression is lifting. Take out the "d-e" and
the "i," he said, and you have the words "PRESS ON."
Evidently Mr. Spaulding has done this very thing.

During 1931, the worst yet to business of all types and
a time when many conservative institutions went definitely
in the red. the N. C. Mutual increased its admitted assets
by $123,700.55 and paid to its policyholders and benefi-
ciaries $995,456.84, which was $113,452.66 more than in
1930. Since its organization over $11,000,000 has been paid
out in claims. There are 207,000 policyholders carrying
$36,000,000.00 worth of insurance. A sinking fund in assets
of $3,907,319.57 is kept. There are 1,000 employes. of
which 600 are full time workers.

Digest these figures, you who think all Negro business
is a joke and the race is incapable of dealing in big finance!
There is that here which should fill every race-conscious
Negro with justifiable pride. It is a record which few com-
panies anywhere, no matter what their age or financial
backing. can boast. Bringing the facts even closer home.
on the matter of the large working staff of the N. C. Mu-
tual. it means that 1.000 Negroes here and elsewhere are
gainfully employed in a business created by Negroes who
might freeze you out cf your jobs did not this company
exist.

And yet the 207,000 policyholders represent only a piti-
fully small segment of the 12,000,000 Negroes in America.
There are hundreds of thousands of Negroes who could and
ought to be connected with a company of this type. Of this
huge mass, many are helping line the coffers of white
insurance companies where even a job as janitor will not be
given to man with a dark face.

If the race would look at the facts, it would give the
North Carolina Mutual every ounce of its support for if
ever a company had proved itself firmly imbedded finan-
cially and its management able to conquer obstacles
as
mighty as our present depression, it is this insurance com-
pany.
