NEW YORK, July 10.—Two female blackmailers slept behind the bars at Police Headquarters last night. Their arrest was the sequel of the scullery row of two weeks ago at the residence of Senor Joaquin Sanchez, manager of the Spanish department of the New York Life Insurance Company, who lives at St. George, S. I. At that time Senor Sanchez was forced to dismiss his six servants. Two of them, Josephine and Celestine Bernard, French chambermaids, refused to leave and were arrested for making a disturbance in the grounds. The local justice released them on bail and they departed, threatening vengeance. A few days ago Senor Sanchez got a letter from Josephine, which threatened prosecution and exposure of alleged criminality unless he paid her various specified sums. He placed the letter at once in Inspector Byrne's hands and the latter detailed Detectives Dolan and Heidelberg to work up the case. They secured a warrant charging the woman with attempting extortion and last night found the game at No. 609 East Sixteenth street. The women were taken completely by surprise and were conveyed at once to police headquarters. Josephine, who is the arch plotter, is 20 years old. After the sisters had been disposed of on Staten Island they called on Senor Sanchez at his Broadway office and demanded $200 which they claimed he had promised them in addition to their wages. The charge of blackmail was pressed against them, the claim being that their story is an invention from beginning to end.
