SPENCE OPPOSED FOR RE-ELECTION BY J.J. JOHNSON
Salary of Master and Non-Partisan League Affiliation Are Discussed
The state grange had a busy morning commencing early, as farmers are accustomed to do, and working until the dinner horn blew. The morning was devoted to discussing the proposed increase, or change of salary of the Master. The salary is $300 a year with $4 a day and expenses while traveling. It is proposed to change this to a salary of $1,200 a year and limiting the expense account to $1,500.
This afternoon the first thing on the program was the threshing out of the Non-Partisan league matter, and from indications a pretty warm debate is anticipated. From the conversation heard in the lobby at the noon hour it apparently is the consensus of opinion that the grange will steer clear of it.
Nominations for the offices were made this morning as follows:
Master - C. E. Spence and J. J. Johnson.
Overseer - C. D. Hoffman, H. C. Wheeler and Mrs. Z. S. Fletcher.
Lecturer - Minnie E. Bond.
Steward - C. P. Kaiser, M. C. Glover and M. P. Young.
Assistant Steward - Charles H. Hayes.
Chaplain - Cyrus Walker,
Treasurer - H. Hirshberg and F. M. Gill.
Secretary - C. T. Dickenson, Mary S. Howard, Mrs. M. E. O'Neil, A. C. Newell and Mrs. Winnie Braden.
Gate Keeper - C. C. Borlan and R. N. Lovelace.
Ceres - Mrs. Carrie M. Sales, Mrs. Laura Locke and Mrs. Ellen G. Lambert.
Pomona - Mrs. Ira M. Gill, Miss Golda Combs and Mrs. Ruth Miles,
The election is billed for tonight with the main fight centered on the master. While it is expected Mr. Johnson will make a strong showing the opinion of most in the lobby at noon seemed to be that Spence had strength enough to pull through for re-election.
Among other things for the evening session is an address by President Kerr of the Oregon Agricultural College.
Against Non-Partisan League
As the call was made by counties to introduce resolutions at the Tuesday afternoon session of the state grange, it developed that any affiliation with the Non-Partisan league would meet with strenuous opposition.
From Multnomah, Douglas, Columbia and Coos counties came resolutions to the effect that the state grange should paddle its own canoe and not become mixed up with any Non-Partisan league proposition. The whole proposition will be threshed out this afternoon when a vote will be taken to decide the political complexion of the state grange for the coming year as far as the Non-Partisan league is concerned.
In another resolution introduced, the board of control was criticized for refusing to vote an additional $10,000 in order that the work of the state lime board might continue, especially as machinery has been installed but no money on hand to continue the work.
The annual salary of the state master is now $300. A resolution was introduced to the effect that the salary of the state master be placed at $1200 a year with traveling expenses and that he should devote all his time to the work.
The use of wheat in the manufacture of beer and also the necessary use of coal in the breweries was condemned and a resolution introduced asking the president to prohibit the use of coal and wheat for such purposes.
Another resolution introduced calls on the government to regulate the price not only on what the farmer raises but on what he is obliged to buy.
All resolutions are referred to committees and then debated on the floor.
This morning officers for the coming year were nominated the election to take place this evening at 7:30 o'clock.
