Full Text

A meeting of the inhabitants of the country lying along the Seneca Lake, was held at Faulkner's Hotel, in Geneva, on the 20th Dec. for the purpose of considering the subject of the navigation between the Seneca Lake and the Erie Canal, and the opening a direct road from the village of Geneva to the Allegany River, to communicate with the road leading direct to Pittsburgh. The advantages resulting from these improvements, are said to be important, inasmuch as the rich population on the north part of the valley of the Ohio, will be enabled to transport their supplies of merchandize from the city of New York, through the Grand Canal, the proposed road and the Allegany River, more than thirty per cent. cheaper, than they now can over the Allegany mountains, from the city of Philadelphia. The meeting took up the subject with considerable spirit, and appointed a committee of seven to confer with the officers of the Seneca Lock Navigation Company, on the subject of improving the Navigation; and at the same time a like committee with full powers in order to accomplish the opening of the road.
