to Weeks

WASHINGTON. Aug.
17.-Discussion
among senators centers upon
Assistant Secretary Dwight Davis as
the most likely choice of President
Coolidge as a successor to Secretary
of War Weeks, who is not expected
to return to the capital.

In the first place, he comes from
Missouri and that state is debatable
territory, with the chances strongly
favoring the Democrats in the cam-
paign to elect a successor to Sen-
ator Selden P. Spencer, who died
recently.

At the present time the Democrats
appear to have the best of it. Sena-
tor James A. Reed Democrat. Is
making a strong canvass to have a
Democrat chosen in Spencer's place.
Three likely candidates are in the
field, any one of whom, it is believed.
would win if the election were held
now.

With Missouri honored with a seat
in the cabinet, the President's ad-
visers believe the state would elect
a Republican senator.

Hanford MacNider. former com-
mander-in-chief of the American
Legion. is also mentioned. But Mac-
Nider comes from Iowa. and Iowa is
not considered doubtful territory so
far as the election of the next sena-
tor is concerned. Cummins appar-
ently is certain of re-election and
the appointment of a cabinet offi-
cer from Iowa would not have the
same effect as if one from Missouri
were chosen.

The only danger to Cummins'
chances of re-election appears to be
in the disposition which the senate
may make of the Brookhart election
contest. If the senate should give
Brookhart's place to Dan F. Steck.
