Full Text

The Harbor And the Dredge.—We paid a visit to the mouth of the river on Wednesday last, and found the work on the cribs progressing finely under the supervision of Mr. Smoke's able superintendent, Mr. Chas. Fulton. There are twelve cribs now completed and ready to sink when the proper dredging is completed, and the work on the balance is being pushed forward at a rapid rate. The cribs will be sunk in twelve feet of water, and will extend about three hundred yards into the lake from the shore. There are some six or eight scows engaged constantly in carrying stone, gathered along the beach of the lake, and which are to be used in filling up the cribs and keeping them in place.

The Dredge has commenced operations and works finely, as was to be expected of anything which Mr. Packard has the construction of. She has already dug out a channel about fifty feet long by about twenty wide and twelve feet deep, and when her machinery gets into easy running order, she will fairly 'make the dirt fly.'

The channel between the piers will be dredged to a depth of twelve feet, which is sufficient for anything that floats on the lakes, and then we will have one of the safest and best harbors on Lake Michigan, if not on the whole chain of great lakes.
