Full Text

From the Lynchburg Republican.

The Whigs of Amherst formed a Clay Club at Pedlar Mills some weeks since. In the published report of their preliminary Committee we find the following passage:

"The future happiness and prosperity of the nation, the union of the States, and the preservation of our civil and religious institutions mainly depend upon the success of the Whig cause"!!

The preservation of our religious institutions, we are told, depends upon the election of Mr. Clay. He is to be placed at the head of the CHURCH, as well as of the State, is he? Is not Mr. Clay a gambler? So say those who have been on terms of intimacy with him. Is he not a profane swearer? No man who knows him at all will deny this.

He, not long since, walked up to Mr. Speaker Polk in the House of Representatives, and said to him, "Go home God damn you—where you belong." On another occasion, he is said to have publicly called the Democrats "a set of Damned scamps"—and we have heard persons of both political parties speak of his habitual profanity.

These habits, to say nothing of others of which he has been accused, give him an irresistible claim to the confidence and support of the religious portion of the community, do they not, Messrs. Whigs of Amherst?

We dislike to refer in this manner to Mr. Clay's private character; but when an attempt is made to palm him off on the religious public as the 'main' hope of the Church as well as of the State, that public should be apprized of the manner in which the religion of our blessed Redeemer is exemplified in his life and conduct.

Whigs of Amherst formed a Clay Club at Pedlar Mills. Their committee report stated that the nation's happiness, union of States, and preservation of civil and religious institutions depend on Whig success, particularly electing Mr. Clay. The article questions this by alleging Clay is a gambler and profane swearer, citing incidents like telling Polk 'Go home God damn you' and calling Democrats 'a set of Damned scamps', and notes his habitual profanity.
