Many Harnett Farmers In Annual Cotton Competition

County Agent C. R. Ammons released a list of Harnett County farmers today who have participated in the 1953 five-acre cotton production and quality demonstration contest.

According to a report from J. A. Shacklin, cotton specialist of North Carolina State College, Harnett County is leading in the County and State cotton production and quality program with more people participating than any other county in North Carolina.

The County will receive several awards including first and second state prizes of $800 and $400, and three district awards, first, second and third prizes of $300, $200 and $100 each.

County awards to be made in Harnett will be $75 and $50, for first and second prizes respectively.

Ammons expressed appreciation for the work of the various members of the contest committee. These include: R. J. Denny, teacher of agriculture at Dunn High School; J. S. Sanders, teacher of Agriculture at Angier High school; F. M. Puryear, with the Soil Conservation Service; and T. D. O'Quinn, assistant county agent.

Negro workers were: C. R. Dowdy, teacher of agriculture in the Harnett County Training School, and L. K. Boston, Negro County agent.
