Defence of Portland.

The spirited measures pursuing for the protection of this town, afford another proof of the determined & unshaken spirit of resistance, that actuates Americans. In order to facilitate its defence, the inhabitants met on Monday last, in town meeting, for the laudable purpose of raising a sum of money for the mounting such cannon belonging to the United States, and other cannon that may be in town, as are fit for service, and providing the necessary ammunition &c. for the same, and to erect additional fortifications; for which purpose the sum of two thousand dollars was voted, and a committee was raised to carry the business into effect, consisting of Captain LEMUEL WEEKS, Captain DAVID SMITH, Major HUGH M'LELLAN, Captain EBENEZER DAVIS, Lieut. DAVID HALE, Capt. DANIEL TUCKER, and Mr. ROBERT BOYD. Capt. Weeks has proved the cannon at the fort and put them in a state of requisition.
