Two women of muscle and avoirdupois appeared before an Eastern District gathering last night on the stage of a public theatre in modified fighting costume and proceeded to pummel each other after the violent fashion prevalent in the prize ring.
The place was crowded to suffocation. Brooklyn politicians of prominence graced the ringside. Brooklyn policemen, conspicuous for their inaction until the best of 'the fun' was over, were sprinkled liberally through the throng. Howling and miscellaneous mob of humanity made up the rest of the cultured assemblage.
A prize of $25 was dependent upon the issue of the fight. The women clinched and slugged and bled through three rounds and part of a fourth, when, seeing that one of them was giving out and that the sport was likely to run low, the police ended the affair.
The occurrence hardly calls for comment. In the disgusting details of the brutal affair is to be read all that could be suggested by any pen. But for Brooklyn's good name and for the sake of a race which claims to have made this age one of progress and of high civilization, some one should ask, and see to it that an answer is forthcoming, why this thing was permitted.
