PORTSMOUTH.
To the PRINTER.

Ask you what Provocation I have had.
The strong Antipathy of Good to Bad
When Truth or Virtue an Affront endures,
"Th' Affront is mine my Friend and should be yours."
Pope.

When any particular Branch of Business, is Selected out to fall a sacrifice to the Avaricious Purposes of designing Men, Misrepresentations will never be wanting; how true this suggestion is, may be determined by inspecting your last Gazette, the views of our West India Friends are more Extensive than to be confined to the narrow Limits of their own Islands, they never will be satisfied til the Colonies on the Continent feel the Effects of their Ambitious and unreasonable Desires. What can be more plain than their present Designs against the New England Distilleries? Their oppressive Remonstrances couched under the fallacious pretexts that are made at home to prevent it will be productive of nothing less than a total suppression of that fundamental Branch of the New England Trade. by which many Families of distinguished Merit; must soon be reduced to a state of Dependency. How severe is the general Reflection? when a Parent particularizes his regard for one child more than another, especially when their whole deportment is equally obliging, and all try which can exceed in Duty. As in the Natural so in the Political State this Observation would be just; but we cannot suppose Great Britain to be so infatuated and Blind to her own Interest as to regard her West India Islands, more than her immensely large Colonies on the Continent; yet if we silently submit. we shall inevitably be Involved in every Difficulty that the factious Spirit of self Interest can produce. Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientiam
