Full Text

There have been so many terrible
and fatal accidents from the use of
coal oil in its various forms, that we
copy from the Boston Journal of
Chemistry an article on that subject,
and commend it to the careful con-
sideration of our readers. It does
seem as though some law might be
enacted that would protect the lives
of the people. But doubtless this
would be regarded as interfering with
men's liberty to destroy life for money,
and come in conflict with the moral
idea resolution of our Democratic
Platform. So the blessed and glorious
privilege of manufacturing burning
fluids for the destruction of women
and children must not be interfered
with. "The benighted victims of an
imperial government may submit to
the despotic restriction of suicide by
fire, but free-born Americans could
never bear such arbitrary infringe-
meut of their personal liberty."
