Full Text

Hon. John C. Moulter of New York was in the city yesterday. Mr. Moulter was a member of the New York legislature eight years ago, but is now connected with one of the largest investment companies in the Empire state. He is an uncompromising disciple of Jackson and a prominent member of the organization known as the "County Democracy." A reporter for the EAGLE had a short talk with him yesterday afternoon and found him exceedingly well posted in national politics, so far as they relate to the nomination of a Democratic ticket. He said that even in the Empire state Hill is too dead, as a presidential candidate, to skin, and that Cleveland is the man who will be backed by the voice of New York, notwithstanding Hill's midwinter delegates.

"We are going to hold a convention in May," said he, "that will elect delegates to the Chicago convention, and I want to make the prediction that they will be recognized there. They will be Cleveland delegates, too, and will be sent there by the decent element of the New York Democracy; an element that represents the substantial interests of the state.

"Will Hill be a candidate before the convention?"

"I don't think he will. Hill is hearing from the country and the voice of the people is so strong in opposition to his tactics that he will not dare offer himself as a candidate when the time comes. While he is an unscrupulous trickster, nevertheless he is a smart fellow, and mark my words, his policy from now on will be to try and restore himself to good standing with the Democracy only. You will, in my opinion, hear him declare himself one of these days for Cleveland."

"Don't you think he will knife Cleveland if that gentleman is nominated?"

"No. The fact is Hill must, out of necessity, rather than choice, give Cleveland better support than would be expected from him if he had not the reputation of being against him. Every move of his will be watched with five million pairs of Democratic eyes, and he knows it. He is really prejudged of treason against Cleveland and if New York is lost he will be blamed for it, whether he is guilty or not, and he knows it. He will be compelled then not only to take Cleveland's side but to do everything in his power to carry the state for him. Hill has none of the element of a deliberate political suicide and he knows very well that he must carry the state to avoid an untimely political end." Do you think that Gorman will be a candidate?

"No. This is strictly Cleveland year and no other Democrat can be found to oppose him. No Democrat who has an ambition to become president can afford to be a candidate with Cleveland fever at its present height. Gorman and Gray and Flower would all like to be candidates but not till they can have a respectable body of people at their backs. There will be but one regular candidate before the Chicago convention and he will be nominated on the first ballot; and his name is Grover Cleveland."

Mr. Moulter was on his way back to New York from Dallas, Tex. He had been in Wichita once before, about seven years ago, and he was astonished at the strides made by the city since then. He stated that Kansas stands higher in New York financial circles now as it has at any time since he has been connected with the investment business.
