Many Changes Being Made in Point Charts

Washington, May 3-INS-Millions of American housewives, equipped with a new batch of ration stamps, today revised their shopping budgets to conform with OPA's monthly revision of meats and processed foods point values.

OPA announced nearly 100 changes in the two point charts, including the elimination of dried or dehydrated soups from the ration list.

At the same time, G. I. and J blue stamps, totaling 48 points, became valid for purchases of canned goods during May, along with 16 points of red F stamps good for meat, fats, canned fish and cheese. Red G stamps become valid May 9.

Other food front developments included Office of War Information reports

1. Listing the Army's meat requirements for 1943 at 2,750,000,000 pounds, or approximately 12 per cent of the national supply. The Army anticipates slightly more than eight tenths of a pound of meat per day for each soldier.

2. Suggesting that U. S. war plants, whose workers have experienced difficulty in obtaining adequate and nutritious meals might profit by the experience of the British in setting up in plant canteen services to feed industrial employees.

The OPA said that the decision to eliminate dried or dehydrated soups from rationing was prompted by the fact that production has been rapidly increasing and wholesale inventories were 50 per cent larger at the close of March than at the end of February.

"If dried or dehydrated soups were non-perishable, this situation could have been corrected under rationing," OPA said. "However, warm humid weather causes rapid spoilage of these products. Rather than risk this danger, it was decided to make the soups ration free for the time being."

Approximately 38 changes were made in the processed foods point table for May, the most significant being an appreciable lowering of the point values of canned fruit and vegetable juices to speed up their sales. In spite of the fact that downward revisions were made last month, consumer purchasing has been slower than desired, OPA said.
