CITY COUNCIL MEETS
TO CONSIDER RENTAL
A.B. HALL BASEMENT

A special meeting of the City Council convened last night to consider an ordinance providing for a five-year lease of the basement floor of the A. B. Hall by L. A. Sturm of the Alaska Meat Company.

Sturm wishes to rent the floor, at a rental of $225 a month, for public food lockers, storage, and allied lines of business.

The ordinance, numbered 318, also calls for a special election, costs to be defrayed by the lessee, for public ratification or rejection of the proposal.

According to the terms of the ordinance, Sturm's lease is unconditional for the first five years, with an option for a five-year renewal and 60 days notice to be given if the city wishes to cancel the lease.

The policy of the present Council is to avoid cancellation unless the premises should be required for public use.

The meeting was adjourned and re-convened for a second reading, and again for a third reading in order to expedite the publication of the proposed ordinance.

Before the second reading, a provision for the payment of $5 to each Council member and the Mayor for holding the special meeting was deleted from the bill.

The special election will be called at least 30 days from the day of the third reading of the proposal on a date to be announced by the City Clerk. The election will probably be in January, and will be held in the City Council chambers.
