"City of Washington, March 26, 1814.
The Yazoo bill from the senate authorizing a compromise, has passed the house with several amendments by a majority of eight. On this highly important question much eloquence was displayed. Mr. Sharp of Kentucky discovered in opposition to the bill great zeal, information and ability. In my next I will give you an outline of the bill, with its several amendments. The embargo has again been brought on the tapis in the senate and is shortly to be discussed. I am afraid there is an inclination to repeal it—originating from the impossibility of enforcing it, and from the manner in which it is violated on the frontier, &c.
Those who voted for the Yazoo compromise from Ky. were Messrs. Clark and Montgomery, all the rest voted against it who voted at all."
The bill establishing 41 banks in Pennsylvania has passed both houses of their legislature by a constitutional majority, without the approbation of the governor.
