Full Text

Such an opinion does the French King still entertain of Monf. de Calonne, although he has been persuaded by powerful motives to remove him from his Councils, and to banish him to Bernois, that he has given him a pension of three thousand pounds per annum: A strong and conclusive proof of approbation. Monf. de Fourqueux, who has been appointed in the room of the dismissed Minister, is said to be dissatisfied already with his office, and has intimated his wishes to the Sovereign to resign it. No man of principle or honour, should the Comptroller General's seat again be vacated, will offer himself as a candidate for it, since a secret influence seems to preponderate there, which commands in all cases: and Calonne, who is apparently the passive, is sub rosa the active Minister.
