"Cotton is rising
Van Buren is coming!"
We congratulate the Planters of Mississippi upon the cheering prospect which awaits them. Every day's mail brings us information of the gradual rise of these two staple commodities. Van Buren stock is above par, and that fact of itself is well calculated to enhance the price of cotton. The prosperity of the one keeps pace, pro rata, with the demand for the other. What a contrast between the Cotton Market at the present period, and seven years ago! Then cotton was only worth about 12 to 15 cents; now it is worth full 19, and no doubt will soon come up to 20! and to what is this owing? The answer is at hand. The wise policy pursued during the administration of Andrew Jackson--an administration which has done more for Southern interests than all preceding administrations ever done before. In effecting this glorious result Martin Van Buren has fully participated. By the aid of his influence and popularity, New York, hitherto a Tariff State, is now found going hand in hand with the South in favor of a reduction of the Tariff to the wants of an economical administration of the government. In view of these things, we ask the Planters of this State, if they are ready to abandon one who has proven himself their friend, and take to their embraces a man whose opinions and policy are undetermined, and who stands ready at any moment to barter them away for political power? No, no! It cannot be possible. The people of this State will never abandon Mr. Van Buren until they become blind to the past, and reckless to the future We say never while
