Temperance Ode,
"Our cause when first to light it burst,
Read by a dauntless few,
Appear'd so small, its early fall
Our foes prepared to view;
But more and more, from shore to shore,
Its influence shall extend—
Our flag unfurl'd around the world.
Triumphant to the end!"
The good and great from church and state
Now swell our long array;
Five millions more, on sea and shore,
Still own and bless our sway.
A mercy's call we listen all,
Undaunted by the host;
With Death we cope, in earnest hope,
Through God, to save the lost.
When darkness lowers, oh be it ours
To cheer the pilgrim's way;
To dash the cup and lift him up
To hail a brighter day!
Haste, brothers, haste! oh can ye waste
The precious moments given,
While ye may save from a drunkard's grave
One child of hope and heaven!
