FAIRPLAY, Colo., (AP)--Several weeks ago, 75-year-old Andrew McGregor was told by friends that the irritable dog that shared his mountain home would be the death of him.
Today the elderly pensioner is alive because of the dog.
Although still in an oxygen tent at Fairplay Community Hospital, McGregor was reported holding his own after spending four days in his remote cabin four miles east of Bailey without food or water.
He suffered a stroke which paralyzed his left side last Wednesday. He waited for someone to stop by until Friday, then called his faithful pet.
McGregor pinned this note to his collar: "I can't walk. Help me. McGregor." He then told the dog: "Find somebody."
The animal trotted four miles to Bailey, but everyone thought him too wild to pet.
On Saturday, however, 14-year-old Dick Dinsmore of Denver, in Bailey on a fishing trip with his parents, called to the dog in a friendly fashion.
The shaggy black and white dog allowed Dick to pet him. Then the boy noticed the note.
Deputy Ray King went to the cabin to find the elderly man slumped in his rocking chair.
McGregor's dog has resisted efforts of Bailey residents to give him shelter and spends his time running between the town and his master's cabin. He has been seen to eat food left for him.
