FLASH BLIZZARD TAKES
LIVES OF THREE SOLDIERS

ANCHORAGE (UPI) - A sudden blizzard in the lower reaches of the Chugach Mountains about 15 miles from Anchorage took the lives of three Fort Richardson soldiers and hospitalized nine others early yesterday.

All the men were members of Co. C, 1st Battle Group, 23rd Infantry.

The deaths and injuries came during a mountain training exercise when the men were struck by a sudden blizzard as they were crossing the steep, bald ridge between Ship Creek and the south fork of Campbell Creek.

The men were at about the 4,000-foot level on the ridge when the storm struck about midnight. The wind was estimated at more than 70 miles per hour.
