It is a circumstance of note that since 1861 the wheat crop of Great Britain has also been deficient. However, the present crop in this country will probably be ten millions of bushels greater than in 1860, and within five millions of a product in proportion to the increase of population. The decrease for the eleven States of the South is estimated at seventeen millions of bushels, less than five-tenths of the crop of 1859. The California crop, which was six millions of bushels in 1860, well, it is thought, double that quantity this year.
The yield of oats is extraordinary, and indicates an increase from 171,497,072 in 1859 to 271,912,605 bushels in 1866. It is the only crop in the South that maintains equality with its last census exhibit. Hay is short, but better in quality. The Southern returns for cotton do not indicate that the crop will fall below 1,750,000 bales.
After the war commenced and the Southern members had withdrawn, Congress passed Pacific Rail Road Bills, in what seemed at the time to be a reckless and uncalculating spirit. It was ten to one whether the enterprise would ever be carried into effect; but now it appears that they are making satisfactory progress, and promises to become a fixed fact, like the Illinois Central Rail Road, which was regarded, when the Bill passed, as an idle and extravagant enterprise. What this country can do, if blessed with domestic peace, and a cordial re-union and co-operation of its several sections, is almost beyond the bounds of imagination, for what it has done appears to be fabulous.
