Mexico is delighted to have Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Jackson playing a return engagement, after such a long absence!
The Jacksons you know well. They are on an indefinite vacation, and have visited New York, Florida and Havana already. How delighted they are with the Mexico of today!
In Havana, they felt the prices of everything very unreasonable, but the prices here delighted their hearts! As for the service in the hotel ... "it is right now!" said Mrs. Jackson. Can't you just hear her? But both were overcome to have a suit of Mr. Jackson's, altered the same day, by a little tailor in the calle."
Mrs. Jackson, who was secretary for the Chamber of Commerce, you remember, said that she wished that I were interviewing her on Alaska. I did learn a lot more about your fascinating country ... though I had seen gorgeous pictures years ago, as my husband was on the First Alaskan Aerial Expedition in 1926. Again my interest was stimulated to see for myself the glories of Alaska.
Mr. Jackson told me that he went to Alaska in 1904, and Mrs. Jackson later.
The Jacksons had a lovely suite at the Hotel Reforma ... I had to laugh, for the last time I was in it was years ago to meet King Carol and Mme. Lupescu. I was here diplomatically at the time. Just to show how vague I can be ... Barbara Hutton was there with the name of Countess something or other, which was difficult, and I just did not take the trouble to master, so when I was introducing people, I just had to keep asking her name. Later at a dinner a pal said that I took first prize, for I had asked the famous Barbara Hutton her name five times, to his certain knowledge. I had no idea who she was, without a hat, too! (Did hear later that her suitcases had been lost, poor child!) Countesses were a dime a dozen here during the war, you know. The Jacksons enjoyed that little tid-bit. Also told me that it was cheaper for them to travel than to stay at home! Imagine that!
The best of everything, they have enjoyed. The friendliness of the Mexicans and their gentleness, very much impressed them. The food is excellent; the climate ideal—no high-pressuring from anyone. The tremendous growth and modernness of Mexico astounded them. The beauty of the buildings and Diego Rivera's murals impressed them greatly. They have planned to see University City ... you saw it in "Time" not long ago, I am sure. It is, truly, fabulous!
The Jacksons have a good guide, and insist that tourists cannot go wrong in any way, with the proper guides ... they also have had fun exploring on their own. They are in Acapulco now, basking in the sun. 'Tis pretty warm there now, I am told by all and sundry! However, there are breezes to be found, so if you come be sure to locate one!
The International Bankers' Convention is meeting here next week. Hope that they will return for it. Should be interesting. Be prepared to hear many interesting stories when the Jacksons return, for they are enjoying everything to the fullest and will have plenty to tell. We would like to keep them here, but then, you would not like that!
I do so enjoy talking about Mexico, that I would like to tell you more some time!
