The news from England is to the second of May. It appears that Austria has permitted the passage of the French to Dalmatia, through the German territory: There cannot therefore be a new war between Austria & France. On the other hand, there seems to be a perfect understanding amongst all the continental powers, except Sweden and Russia, and they must be quiet.
Those who know any thing of history, know that the Hanoverian connection in Holland and Germany has been the true cause of many wars in Europe during the last century. But "blessed are the peace makers"— there has not been a single important measure taken by the French government, which has not been preceded by an offer of peace to the world;— and this from their manly acknowledgement of American independence in 1778, to the last offer to the British government on this subject, after the victory of Austerlitz and the peace of Presburg.
Every thing the British now do, finds a ready excuse in the deceptious idea of its necessity to their "self-preservation." They seize on American commerce without even a porter's salutation of by your leave gentlemen. They blockade by proclamation—they impress our fellow-citizens with or without protections, by thousands—they murder by system in our own waters, and call it chance—and they arrest and detain every vessel bound to any port of Europe, of the impediments to which no person in America could have had the least intimation.
When a man reads a British newspaper, it is precisely as if he saw the sun through a cloud. He knows it is somewhere, but in what point of the horizon he cannot ascertain. It is just so with the truth through the foul medium of the British press. We know it exists;—but how, when or where—time, place or circumstance, it is impossible to determine.
