FATE OF PORTUGAL. The detention of the Portuguese vessels by Bonaparte, seems ominous of much danger to the future independent existence of that nation. It cannot with justice, be regarded as a measure of precaution, calculated to insure compliance with the demand of the French government to exclude British commerce from the Tagus. The enormous power of one party, when contrasted with the imbecility of the other, leaves no room to doubt of immediate and ready compliance with such a demand. We can only therefore suppose the measure to intimate, that Portugal comes within the limits of those vast plans of territorial changes entertained by our enemy. Plans which, so far from being impeded by the hostility of other powers, have hitherto been most rapidly carried into effect during a state of warfare.

Event Details

The detention of Portuguese vessels by Bonaparte is interpreted as more than a precautionary measure to enforce French demands excluding British commerce from the Tagus, given the power imbalance ensuring compliance. It suggests Portugal is targeted in France's vast plans for territorial changes, which have advanced rapidly during wartime despite hostilities from other powers.
