Alaska Notes
Gathered From Territorial Exchanges.

The Kantishna has been included in the mineralized areas examined under authority of an act by the last Territorial Legislature, Earl R. Pilgrim having recently returned to Fairbanks after making a survey of that district. Mr. Pilgrim traveled through the Kantishna for three weeks, examining many different properties. A thorough survey was made of W. J. Shannon's property on Slippery creek, in the Hannah glacier district. The mine contains copper, cinnabar and antimony. Game is very plentiful in the Kantishna this season, Mr. Pilgrim says. Both inside and outside of McKinley Park, wolves are said to be taking a heavy toll among mountain sheep. From the Alaska Road Commission's camp at Sable Pass wolf was witnessed in the act of pulling down a sheep. The men drove it away, but it merely ran a short distance beyond and brought down another sheep. Instances have been reported where a single wolf would kill a score of sheep at a time and leave them almost untouched. Big grizzly bears are numerous all through the Kantishna. They have come in contact but little with man and show no fear of him. On the trip he has just completed Mr. Pilgrim encountered a big fellow eating berries. The bear showed no animosity but also no fear, and Mr. Pilgrim, who was unarmed, gave him a wide berth. About a month ago Mr. Shannon was making a trip through the country and had with him a big dog which was carrying a pack. He happened to glance towards the dog and saw its fur standing on end. Mr. Shannon instantly realized what had excited the dog and whirled around, rifle in hand, to see a big bear tracking him down. He shot and killed the animal, and is convinced that had not the dog become excited the bear would have been on him before he would have had time to use his rifle.
