Full Text
In reading an account of the great dinner in Charleston, given to General Hayne and Col. Drayton, we were much gratified with the noble, independent and manly sentiments of Col. Drayton, expressed on that occasion. He denies that South Carolina has the right to nullify an Act of Congress, and prefers the present Tariff, with all of its oppressions, to disunion. These are the sentiments of a man whose heart is purity itself, whose spirit is of the proudest and loftiest cast, and whose head is as clear as the soundest dictates of reason, talents and judgment. No one acquainted with the character of Col. Drayton can accuse him of slavish principles, a want of patriotism, or a lack of chivalry. When our country is endangered he will be found in the van of peril, whilst many talking, blustering patriots may be seen skulking from danger. That sort of patriotism which is evinced by high sounding words at the festive board, is a thing in which we have no faith—"A barking dog seldom bites."
