" I am sorry to inform you that the Bay is almost evacuated, and shortly expect will be compleatly so; and must inform you it is not in my Power to comply with your request, for those Gentlemen, with the principal Inhabitants of any note, have precipitately departed from hence, with all their Slaves and most valuable Effects, and others are going off as fast as they get their Interest away. This sudden Rout is occasioned by the strongest Assurances of our common Enemy (the Spaniards) coming with a superiour force utterly to extirpate us out of the Bay ; and our Apprehensions still increase, by various Reports.of Preparations making against us, and some Pettiaugers have been seen among the Keys, we imagine to take a view of our Strength ; and when some Vessels of Force have departed from this place, we may hourly expect them.--Goods and provisions is plenty, and almost a Drug, there being no Buyers here of Consequence, and after the Return of the Crafts now gone up the Rivers, there will not remain 300 Tuns of Wood cut in the Bay, and but little of that to be come at for want of Slaves : The few Inhabitants that are left have declined cutting.their principal Aim is to depart in safety with their Effects."
