Florida's new laws designed to preserve segregation actually require public officials to cheat, Rep. John B. Orr, Jr., said Tuesday.
Addressing the Miami Beach B'nai B'rith Lodge at the Shelborne Hotel, Orr said the laws violate "everyday, common rules of decency."
Orr was the sole voice raised against some of the measures passed at the recent special session of the Legislature. His stand drew both praise and criticism, but he said letters agreeing with his stand outnumbered those of condemnation.
Orr said the religious philosophy of the hatemongers was not based on the brotherhood of man.
"We are not taught to love our white neighbor, our Negro neighbor, our Jewish, Catholic or Protestant neighbor, but simply to love our neighbor," he said.
