Full Text

By a "return" of the Secretary of War, made a few days since, it appears, that since the 1st of January, 1809, 51 commissioned officers have resigned, 16 have died, and 6 have been cashiered by courts martial. That out of 1667 troops, 523 died between the 1st of May and the 15th of November—6 months and 15 days; and that, of the same body of 1667 621 more were sick, making together, 1144, and leaving 523; and the secretary adds, that, "the number of deaths will be found eventually to exceed those stated in the return." It seems, by the purchase of Louisiana, we have obtained, not only a grave for our money, but for our men. It is a melancholy tale.—Con. Mir.
