Full Text
On Saturday last, being the fifth of November, or Pope-day, the inhabitants of this town were entertained with a curious exhibition:--not of Guy Fox and his companions, as usual, but of a character in whom America has been deeply interested--that of BENEDICT ARNOLD, the American traitor.
The figure that represented this infamous and abandoned character was strikingly emblematical.--An old hat, greasy and dirty, covered his infernalship's head, on either side of which appeared a face--or, 'two faces under one hat,'--His clothes were all rather the worse for wear, particularly his breeches and stockings, which were shockingly out of repair; a rusty sword graced a scurvy belt which encircled his waist:--the different passions of guilt, envy, malice, deception, flattery, false valour, mock-patriotism, &c. were strongly imprinted on his countenance--to conclude--it was supposed by some, every feature examined, to be the nicest representation ever exhibited. It was paraded through the town, to the immortal honor of the young patriots who conducted this affair, neither of whom have yet entered their teens.--We cannot say whether it was committed to the flames--but suppose it was consigned to a dissolution more infamous.
