Full Text

New-York. Sept. 19. The crowd collected within Castle Garden, and on the Battery, to witness the ascension of Mr Robertson, was immense. They were fated to meet with a disappointment. The cords had been cut, and the balloon was moving gracefully in its upward career, when it was brought in contact, by the wind, with the top of the flag staff, in such a manner as to suspend the balloon upon the staff, where it swung to and fro. as it was impelled by the wind. The balloon was perforated, and the gas was fast escaping. The situation of the Aeronaut was peculiarly perilous. The car in which he sat was nearly reversed, and every one anticipated that he would be precipitated from this height into the garden. In this juncture he made two or three ineffectual attempts to seize the rope attached to the flag staff, in which he at length succeeded, and swinging himself from the car, descended upon the rope to the ground. The gas soon entirely escaped, and the balloon was left hanging from its untoward position. This failure can in no way be attributable to Mr R. whose arrangements were completely made, and whose ascension would have been a fine one, but for an unforeseen and unavoidable accident.
