Dynamite-Stuffed Bag Found In City

A canvas bag stuffed with a box that contained approximately 80 sticks of dynamite was discovered by police in Southeast Atlanta Sunday afternoon, it was reported.

The dynamite, plus a bag filled with factory-packed dynamite caps with electric wires attached to the caps, was found in the 300 block of Bass St., S.E., at approximately 5 p.m. Sunday, police said.

A 12-year-old white youth discovered the explosive contents, police said, and he told an older brother. The latter man relayed the information to police authorities.

Patrolmen A. C. Potts and R. E. McElreath said they were told by a witness that a white resident of a house in the Bass St. area had displayed it to him about three months ago.

The man who once lived there has since changed his residence to a city in California, police said they learned. He was described as a former construction employee in this city.

The case of dynamite, along with the sack of caps and electric wiring, was bundled together in an abandoned trunk located at the rear of the Bass Street address.

Police officials said the explosive material was taken to the City of Atlanta Construction Department for storage pending further investigation of the matter.
